About LHL Strategies
Every year, millions of seniors lapse or surrender their life insurance policies for little or no value from their insurance company. Life settlements give them the option to sell the policy instead, for significantly more than they would otherwise receive. The money we pay helps meet retirement needs, healthcare costs, long term care expenses, or whatever else they choose.
Lighthouse Life is part of LHL Strategies, Inc., a group of companies providing vertically integrated services for asset managers who acquire and manage life policies and portfolios. We are the only integrated platform in the industry spanning policy acquisition and trading, valuation, management, and portfolio servicing.
We are a remote-first company, and this role can sit anywhere in the U.S. Our offices are in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia. We encourage innovation, protect work-life balance, and are driven to exceed expectations.
About the Role
We are partway through a multi-year technology program that is rebuilding the systems our business runs on, from the applications people use through the services, integrations, and data behind them. This role owns a central part of that engineering.
You will be responsible for the ongoing development and support of our application platform: the .NET services at its core, the Vue interfaces built on top of them, the integrations that keep our systems of record in agreement, and the production environment it all runs on. The work is continuous rather than project-shaped, and it spans both customer-facing and internal applications.
This is build and run, not build and hand off. You will design the services, write and review the code, support them in production, and set the engineering standards.
You will lead, build and grow our development team.
How We Work
We are remote and distributed, and we operate with high transparency and an ownership mentality. Expect a daily standup, visibility into your work via Teams, and blockers flagged before they become emergencies. What we value:
· Flagging problems early, not after they have become crises
· “How can we improve this?” over “This is how we have always done it”
· Systems thinking: automate and document, do not just execute manually
If you thrive when told exactly what to do and left alone, this is not the role. If you thrive when trusted to own outcomes and keep leadership informed, we want to talk.
Roles and Responsibilities
· Design, build, and support the .NET services at the core of the platform, against agreed latency and availability targets
· Define, publish, and version the API contracts between the user interfaces, the middle tier, our analytics services, and our systems of record
· Build and maintain the communications and event layer: transactional messaging, document handling, and the status notifications that keep our systems in agreement
· Support and extend our Vue interfaces, so front end and middle tier evolve together rather than across a handoff
· Own authentication, authorization, and session handling, consistent with our HIPAA control environment
· Own CI/CD and the release process, monitoring and alerting, and the incident and postmortem process
· Own integration architecture across Salesforce, our data warehouse, our pricing and valuation system and third-party data providers.
· Manage technical relationships with our outsourced IT vendors, and act as our technical counterparty to the partner development team
Desired Skills
Hard Skills
· Back-end engineering. 8 or more years building and running production services, with expert-level C# and ASP.NET Core. This one is a requirement rather than a preference.
· Front end. Vue 3 and TypeScript. This is not a specialist front-end role, but our interfaces are in Vue and you will work in those repos rather than route around them.
· AWS and CDK. Running production workloads on AWS, and the ability to read, extend, and refactor an AWS CDK estate. You do not need to be a network or infrastructure engineer; our cloud architect owns that.
· API and service design. REST and event-driven patterns, contract versioning, idempotency, retry and backoff, queue-based decoupling with a service bus.
· Data and persistence. Experience with Amazon RDS, including SQL server and Aurora PostgreSQL
· CI/CD, testing, and operations. Pipeline ownership using GitHub Actions, with unit, integration, and automated UI tests.
· AI-assisted Development. We build with AI every day, and we expect our lead developer to do the same. You use tools like Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor as part of your normal workflow.
Soft Skills
· Owner. You treat the platform as yours and take problems off other people’s desks.
· Hands-on leader. You lead by building, and you grow the people who come next. You would be unhappy in a role that was all process and delegation.
· Analysis and Communication. We are remote and asynchronous. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. Also, you must be able to interact with business subject matter experts and understand and synthesize their requirements.
· Pragmatic. A service that ships and is monitored beats one that is perfect and late. There is no platform team to hide behind here.
Education
· Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Insurance, specialty finance, or healthcare data is a plus.
Compensation and Benefits
· Base salary: Competitive, commensurate with experience
· Benefits: Comprehensive health, dental, and vision; 401(k); flexible PTO
· Remote work: Remote-first, anywhere in the U.S.
